Beaconfire Profiled by Washington Post's TechNews.com
Falls Church, Va., December 10, 2001 — Beaconfire, a provider of Internet consulting and software application development services to medium and large nonprofit organizations, has been profiled by the Washington Post's TechNews.com.
The article describes how Beaconfire's founders worked with Commerce One to spin off the company's nonprofit practice and establish Beaconfire as an independent company committed to serving nonprofit clients.
An excerpt from the article follows:
"We were, of course, slightly concerned about our own futures," Labieniec said. "But the major concern was about our clients: how they would be serviced, what would happen to them."
Labieniec and co-founders Jeffrey Herron, Dottie Hodges and Michael Cervino persuaded 10 other Commerce One staffers to join the new company and set out to prove that a small, private firm could provide equal or better service than a large, public company for nonprofit organizations.
"The whole sector lags behind very badly," Labieniec said. "There is so much they can do through the Internet — fundraising, advocacy, internal communication. Unfortunately, the money just hasn't traditionally been spent on technology."
The company bets that by taking time to explain the benefits of the Internet to clients, building customized sites and charging reasonable fees, it will be able to sway reluctant organizations to increase their technology budgets. They say they charge 45 percent less than what Commerce One used to bill for building sites.
"Slowly the tide has been changing, and our clients are seeing what an enormous effect technology can have on their work," Labieniec said. "The most rewarding part of this experience is helping them succeed, so we'll do what is necessary to make that happen."
