Best Government Web Sites
October 14th, 2005 by AndrewThe Center for Digital Government has announced its 2005 Best of the Web and Digital Government Achievement Awards. My home, Fairfax County, won second place in the county category. The Web site of the Commonwealth of Virginia came in second in the state category. Just over the river, Washington, DC tied for first with the City of New Orleans.
I like Fairfax’s site, but must they charge me a 2.5% premium to pay my car taxes online? I end up mailing a paper check each year, which surely incurs processing costs somewhere else in the food chain. This is hardly congruent with e-government. Or at least they should hide the fees from me so I don’t know!

I like the New Orleans site’s blog-like structure. Items with a long shelf-life but a low profile (like archives) in the sidebars, and rotating, high-profile content in the center column. If any city needs a good website right now, it’s NOLA.
